Freedomfield is a small independent handmade slow fashion label created by me, Calie, in Melbourne/Naarm.
I’m a one girly show acting on a hunch to bring inclusive, upcycled vintage inspired shirts into the world.
Why shirts?
My first creative love was actually crochet - my dear departed Nan taught me when I was around 8 years old. But that's just for me.
Just like many of my creative ideas, it started with a random thought after I noticed all of these very cool vintage style shirts being worn and danced in under the summer sun at music festivals.
I wanted to to bottle that energy. So I bought a basic machine, taught myself to sew and made my first shirt from a vintage tablecloth (pictured).
Through a sh*tload of trial and error, I learned to draft & size my own designs and started selling at markets. The response from customers warmed my little heart. I realised I was on to something wholesome and I kept going. Every step I take teaches me something new.
I didn't want to add more textile waste to the planet, so repurposing existing materials keeps Freedomfield sustainable. It also means your one-of-a-kind shirt comes pre-loaded with it's own story.
My designs are an intentional nod to the vintage camp collar shirts from the 1950s and 60s. I've always loved the aesthetic of old things, and my vintage inspired designs help to showcase the beautiful reclaimed fabrics I personally handpick and bring back to life.
I think that when we are so desperate to express ourselves, fashion often boxes us in according to our size, age and gender. This has always annoyed me, and it's why I created Freedomfield to include all of you, no matter your identity, and to celebrate all the cool and diverse bodies out there.
Freedomfield gives the middle finger to arbitrary fashion rules and supports you to be you - just like those festival punters who inspired me, dancing with freedom in a field.
The people who wear Freedomfield are wonderfully unique - and I like to think my shirts are too.
Thank you for supporting my small business, it truly means everything.
